How To Speed Up Your Internet

The internet connection has become something fundamental in recent years. The connection speed may sometimes be so slow that it causes serious browsing problems. There's nothing worse than having a computer that, despite a Wi-Fi signal at most, browses slowly or has constant buffering when playing a video or streaming online. In this post, I explain all the effective tricks to speed up your internet connection. This will also help you reduce the lag when playing games like League of Legends and Fortnite. You are advised to check your ping from this website before following the guide.

Change The Wi-Fi Transmission Channel

Although it may seem complicated, changing the Wi-Fi transmission channel can be very useful when the internet connection is prolonged. What's the reason for this? Routers use the 2.4 GHz frequency band, which consists of 14 channels. If several electronic devices, such as cordless phones or Wi-Fi printers, transmit on the same channel used by the router, the frequency is saturated, and the signal is weak. In this case, so, it is necessary to move the transmission to another channel. How do I do this? Simple, go to the router settings. You can proceed by tryouts or choose the channel that the router has automatically marked as less crowded.

Windows Update

Your internet connection may also be slowed down by Windows Update. If the service is set to "Automatic", the tool will download and install updates at any time, taking up some bandwidth and risking lowering the network speed. Change its settings to limit the functions of Windows Update in the background.

  1. Enter Windows Update and click on "Advanced Options". Then click on the arrow in the top right bar and go from "Automatic" to "Scheduled".
  2. Make sure that the option "Download updates for other Microsoft products during Windows Update" is not active. Finally, open "Choose how to download updates" and disable the option.

Changing DNS

Sometimes connection problems are due to malfunction or inefficiency of DNS. These online services translate regular text web addresses into IP addresses that identify the servers you connect to. DNS servers are essential for connecting to any website, and if they malfunction, they slow down almost every online operation. Usually, the most reliable are considered to be those of OpenDNS, CloudFlare, and Google. To replace them with those assigned by your phone operator, visit the network settings of your operating system, and enter their numeric addresses instead of the values assigned automatically.

  1. From the Windows 10 search menu bar, type "Network Connection and Sharing Center".
  2. From the list shown on the right, click on the active connection and then "Properties".
  3. Now, locate the "Internet Protocol Version (TCP/IPv4) and click "Properties" again.
  4. A window will open: click on "Use the following DNS server addresses".
  5. In the option "Preferred DNS Server" enter 8.8.8, while in the option "Alternative DNS Server" type 8.8.4.4. And you're done. There are programs, like DNS Jumper, whose task is to find the fastest DNS servers on the fly by testing their performance and applying the best results directly to your configuration.

If nothing above has worked, you may need to reinstall your Windows operating system. You can use bootable USB creator software like Etcher for this task. You can download Etcher from their website and install it following its instructions. Etcher installer is a very tiny file and should download in a couple of minutes.
